I've done that "sir, you've made me so happy through my life" thing a couple of times. The first gentleman was gracious and respectful of the kind words but one grand hero of mine waited until I was hardly out of earshot before ridiculing me to his companions. I'm sure it was just embarrassment but I've not revered his work in the same way since.
